Letters to gunpowder manufacturer in East Hartford, Conn., dealing with the making of kegs, the purchase of brimstone and saltpetre for its production and the transportation of gunpowder to areas from New Jersey to Havana; bill of lading dated June 13, 1836 bears vignette of wharf, sailing ship, row boat, kegs and boxes marked with Chinese characters.

Samuel Leonard Pitkin, from East Hartford, CT, entered the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in 1821 and graduated in 1823. Later he was involved in the dry goods business, the manufacture of gunpowder, and banking. Pitkin also served in the Connecticut State Militia from 1823-1838, rising to the rank of major general.
